Chapter Seventeen
Kenny Morris opened the old well-worn wooden door to the storage room, the dank air made his bulbous nose twitch. He cast his expert eye over the various cans of soups, meats and fish and quickly worked out that there were just over 400 tins of food. Then he checked out the many cardboard boxes of packet soups and powdered desserts, there were too many to count, plus a plethora of dried noodle products, they would be the last thing to eat if it came to that. The only thing they were short of was bottled water. Stocks of this precious commodity had already been diminished because of the dust cloud and when the government in their misplaced wisdom told everyone not to drink the tap water. In hindsight he expected that they would now rather have a plentiful supply of bottled liquids, and wished they had never been so trigger happy in their constant interfering. What he really wanted was a couple of generators and a few jerry cans of petrol, then would have the means to boil any water he could find. Sterilising kits were plentiful but he wanted to boil it up first just to make sure, God knows what was out there in the atmosphere, poisoning everything in its path. He hoped the two men he had sent out scavenging would find some of the things he had written down on the wish list. He closed the door and walked back out into the courtyard of York castle where the other survivors had set up a makeshift camp. It wasnât ideal, as it wasnât the biggest of places, but it sat on the top of a large mound and was an ideal âlook-outâ point for any impending trouble that might come their way and it also held the upper ground.
There were also access points to part of the York wall which also gave them a bit more protection, if and when, an attack would come. Yesterday he and a few of the other men had barricaded most of the small entrance points into the city centre and then they had all, six men, nine women and five children, walked through the city centre itself to search for anymore survivors, they had found none. The two men he had sent out today, Craig and Anthony, were both in their thirties and the youngest of the males, he had given them the task of foragers and they had both excelled in their duties. They needed to all survive the next couple of weeks, or maybe even months, as best they could as Kenny had calculated this is how long it would take for the country to recover. He had been a Staff Sergeant in the Territorial Army and he knew quite a bit about survival and the leadership skills it took to see this bedraggled band of strangers through to the end, it was his duty to King and country to do so. At nearly sixty, his
